Special Optics Linear Polarization Rotators
operate by virtue of a 180 degree phase shift between the extraordinary and
ordinary polarization components. If an incident linearly polarized beam is
aligned to the zero setting on the calibrated dial, the polarization form of the
exiting beam is identical to that of the input.
As one rotates through an angle Ө the beam remains
linearly polarized but is rotated through an angle 2Ө. When an achromactic ½
wave retarder is utilized, the continuous rotation is achievable for a broad
spectral source such as a tunable dye laser.
